Post Doctoral Fellowships

Fellowship Paediatric Orthopaedics

The Paediatric Orthopaedic Division of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is recognized by the Tamilnadu Dr MGR Medical University to run a formal training program in paediatric orthopaedics. This fellowship was started in 2015 and duration of the fellowship is 2 years and there is one slot every year. The candidate will be enrolled to the University at the end of first year of their training in the unit. The course starts on the 1st of September every year. Fellowship Commitments : The two-year fellowship provides adequate exposure to all the paediatric fractures and the common paediatric orthopaedic pathologies. The unit runs 24 X 7 paediatric trauma service and being a tertiary care centre we cater to about 1000 paediatric fractures every year. The fellows are posted on trauma on-call duties regularly and this gives ample opportunity for them to get trained in the management of both simple and complex paediatric trauma. Apart from this, the paediatric unit has specialised services like Hip Preservation, Deformity Correction and Comprehensive Cerebral Palsy Care. This allows the fellows to learn the basic principles of management of these problems as they are involved in patient assessment in out-patient clinics, work-up of the in-patients and actively assisting the surgeries. Pre-operative planning and discussion sessions are held every week in which the fellows present the plan for surgeries scheduled for the entire week. Hands-on training for all the basic paediatric orthopaedic surgeries will be provided based on the performance, and calibre of the fellow. Monthly audits are conducted on a regular basis which again provides a chance for the fellows to learn to critically analyse the post-operative X-rays. The unit is also actively involved in research and every fellow is expected to complete one major research project during their tenure. As part of the curriculum, a detailed logbook should be submitted at the end of the fellowship. At the end of two years, an exit exam will be conducted by the university and the fellowship certificate will be provided by the university upon successful completion of the exam.
