Intertrochanteric Fractures

Fracture in the proximal thigh bone region which is very commonly seen in elderly patients and more common in females > males

  • Elderly - >90 % seen due to trivial trauma following a fall at home
  • Young – Due to a high velocity trauma such as motor vehicle accident

Clinical symptoms

Pain in the affected region and difficulty in weight bearing in the affected limb and externally rotated lower limb

Treatment

Sliding hip screw or an Intramedullary nail can be used for treating these fractures which helps in stabilizing the fracture and makes them walk immediately after the surgery with the help of a walker support.
