Distal Humerus Fractures
INTRODUCTION :
Fractures around the distal end of the humerus result from high velocity injuries such as fall from height, road traffic accidents in young adults and following low velocity injuries such as slip and fall at home in osteoporotic elderly adults.
SYMPTOMS
Swelling and pain around the elbow
Feeling of instability around elbow
Open wounds with exposed fracture ends
Treatment options
Fractures around the elbow are notorious fractures that result in stiffness of the elbow, which is very difficult to treat. Open reduction and internal fixation with pre-contoured locking plates allow early mobilization of joint and better functional outcome. Extra-articular distal humerus fractures are treated with either special locking plates or Ender's nails and additional plate fixation.
Type IIIA open comminuted intraarticular distal humerus fracture underwent debridement and bicolumnar plating with pre-contoured locking plates. Fracture went on to unite with good functional outcome
Type IIIB open comminuted extraarticular distal humerus fracture underwent debridement and extraarticular locking plate fixation with Enders nailing. Fracture united with good functional outcome
