Fractures of the Carpal Bones

Introduction:

Eight small articulating bones, known as carpal bones move cohesively for smooth and fine wrist and hand movements. Carpal bones fractures constitute 15% of all wrist injuries. It occurs commonly in young individuals, contact sports athletes, majorly resulting from motor vehicle accidents, fall on outstretched hands or a clenched fist.

Those fractures that require closed reduction or open reduction with screw or k wire fixation may or may not be associated with ligament repair depending on the instability. Carpal bone fractures are often missed fractures, resulting in nonunion & stiffness and may hinder our day-to-day activities.

Thirty-six years old gentleman with peri lunate dislocation of carpal bones with scaphoid fracture has been treated with open reduction, Herbert screw fixation of scaphoid and pinning of scaphoid to capitate and triquetrum to lunate.

OUTCOME
